Interview: Tau Petersson, Stunlock

Tau Petersson is the president of Skövde based Stunlock Studios and is the second previous SGA winnner we are interviewing.

Age: 24
Residence: Skövde
Education: Game Development, HiS
Studio: Stunlock Studios AB
Most underrated game: Demigod
SGA Experience: Bloodline Champions, winner of Game of the Year 2009

SGA:What are the perks of running your own game studio?
Tau: You get to create your own workplace, chose your own collegues; Stunlock is made up of a strong team that goes back to the time at college. You get to build something from scratch.

SGA: Have you had any previous experiences of running your own business?
Tau:The senior year of high school I ran a project with some classmates where we sold personelized refridgerator magnets.

SGA: What has been the biggest challenge with Stunlock?
Tau: To go from being a group of friends to being a company. For example, you can’t have consensus on all decicions, even though we always let people express their opinions. And just making it work out financially, like paying sallaries during a production phase.

SGA: You recently steped down from being CEO to president [swe: VD to vice VD], what is the diffrence?
Tau: More games, less bussiness. More contact with our community.

SGA: What’s the story behind Bloodline Champions?
Tau: It’s a game project from our senior year at collage. Inspiration came from DotA, Diablo, Oblivion, and others. We took what we considerd being the best parts from those games and out of that grew Bloodline Champions.

SGA: What’s it been like to be working with your publisher Funcom?
Tau: Exciting! They have given us more freedom then what we expected. We kept our integrity. Bloodline Champions is still Bloodline Champions but with som input from people who really know the industry. You got to learn to make games that people are willing to pay for.

SGA: What did it mean to win the SGA?
Tau: It was a big thing for the team. I think that otherwise many would’ve moved on to other game studios instead of starting our own studio.

SGA: Pro tip for competing in the SGA?
Tau: Give 100% and stay innovative! And things doesn’t have to be complicated to be fun.

SGA:Ty!
